II.4 ライフシステム部門

現代の科学技術の進歩において,物質,生命に関する基礎理論とその応用技術の進歩が果たす役割は大きい.ライフシステム部門は,こうした物質,生命に関する研究分野を担っており,化学応用工学分野の物質変換化学,物質機能化学の2大講座および生物工学分野の生命システム工学,生命情報工学,生命機能工学の3大講座の計5大講座からなる. 化学応用工学分野の物質変換化学大講座では,物質合成の基礎となる合成法の開発・構造解析・反応機構解明とそれらを応用した高付加価値物質・高機能材料の合成とその手法に関する研究を行っている.有機合成・高分子合成・材料合成の3研究グループで機能性有機分子および生理活性分子の合成と反応機構,新しい重合反応の開発と重合機構,高機能性材料の開発とその物性などを研究している.他方,物質機能化学大講座では,分析化学,物理化学,電気化学などの手法を用いて「もの」の性質とその本質をより深く研究し,それを新しい技術に活かす教育・研究を実施している.新規化学センサーやバイオセンサーの開発,層状化合物の合成,環境中の微量元素の分析,高圧力下の生物化学反応,超臨界流体の化学,タンパクの結晶成長,原子レベルの電極設計など多様な最先端研究テーマに取り組んでいる.これらが相互に協力して物質の分子設計から機能設計にわたって,化学の諸分野の教育・研究を行い,産業界の要請に応えうる人材養成をめざしている. 生物工学分野では,近年目覚ましい分子生物学等のライフサイエンス技術の進歩を踏まえ,生命現象を織りなす生物の様々な機能の発現機構を分子レベルで明らかにして,その生物機能に学んでそれを超える技術の開発を行っている.例えば,生物学研究の中で開発・発展してきた遺伝子組換え,細胞培養,酵素固定化,バイオインフォマティクス,タンパク質加工等の手法を工学に取り入れ,有用物質や医薬品の生産,エネルギー産生,環境保全,情報処理等の工学的利用を目指している.これらの取り組みは,現在人類が直面しているエネルギー,環境,医療,食糧,情報等に関連する様々な問題解決に資するものである.このような生命現象の分子レベルでの解明を進める基礎的研究とそれに根ざした新規のバイオテクノロジーの開発研究を推進するため,生命機能工学,生命情報工学,生命システム工学の3大講座が協力し合い,社会の要請に応え得る有能な人材の育成を行っている.
