II.6 生物工学科

近年,分子生物学の進歩により生命現象が分子レベルで明らかになりつつある.生物の持つすばらしい機能を解明することは,現在人類が直面しているエネルギー,環境,医療,食糧,情報等に関連する様々な課題の解決に役立つことはいうまでもない.本学科は,生物の示す多様な機能の発現機構を明らかにし,その生物機能に学んでそれを超える技術の開発を行っている.また,生物学研究の中で開発された遺伝子組換え,細胞培養,酵素固定化,バイオインフォマティクス等の手法を工学に取り入れ,有用物質の生産,エネルギー産出,環境保全,情報処理等の工学的利用にも取り組んでいる.教育·研究は,生物機能工学と生物反応工学の2大講座で行っている.

生命を維持する最小の単位は細胞である.細胞のもつ優れた機能のメカニズムを分子および分子集合体レベルで解明し,この生物機能を工学的に応用した地球環境保全システム,医薬品等の高機能物質の生産システムおよび環境生物制御システム等の構築を目指した研究開発と教育を行っている.
